Intent: Our Vision
Talking is fundamental to learning. At Roberttown CE J&I School, pupils are encouraged to speak clearly, confidently and with expression in order to state their ideas and opinions. Just as important is the need to listen carefully to others and respond in appropriate ways. Pupils are given opportunities in all areas of the curriculum to develop their speaking and listening skills, in paired, group or whole class situations. Role play and Drama activities are intrinsic elements of speaking and listening across the school.
Implementation: Our Approach
Opportunities to develop and hone children’s oracy skills are embedded within both the English and the wider curriculum. Teachers plan opportunities involving speaking and listening within literacy and the foundation subjects wherever possible, such as through discussions, debates, performances and presentations. Children practise speaking for a variety of purposes and audiences, adapting their language appropriately as well as their intonation, tone, volume and actions.
- Examples of approaches you will see in our classrooms are as follows:
- Regular opportunities for children to voice their opinions with talk-partners, in small groups and in whole-class situations.
- Activities to develop the ability to take turns and to listen to others.
- Opportunities for pupils to articulate and justify answers, arguments and opinions, give well-structured descriptions, explanations and narratives for different purposes.
- Listening and responding to a variety of different texts including stories, poetry and non-fiction texts (taught through foundation subjects).
- Teaching children to articulate thoughts and feelings of characters in books they read, and the situations they may have experienced.
- Planning opportunities for children to take part in role-play, drama activities, discussion, hot-seating, class collective worships and school performances.
- Encouraging children to speak audibly and fluently with an increasing command of Standard English.
All staff model the correct pronunciation of words and where required discreetly model corrections for pupils where necessary.
