Early Reading at Roberttown
Reading is a huge part of our daily lives at Roberttown school. We want the children to develop a lifelong love of reading and enjoy reading for pleasure. We encourage the children to read and enjoy a wide range of books.
Learning to read- phonics at Roberttown
In the Reception year group we teach phonics using the systematic synthetic phonics programme: Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised. Phonics is taught daily and the children also have an additional 3 reading sessions each week to build fluency and understanding of the text.
Teachers work closely with the children and sometimes identify children who need some extra support with their phonics. These children will receive extra support in small groups.
There are lots of ways you can support your child with their phonics at home. Here is the link to the 'For Parents' section of the Little Wandle website:
The resources on this page will help you support your child with saying their phonemes (sounds) and writing their graphemes (letters). There are also useful videos so you can see how your child is taught at school, to be able to confidently support their reading at home.
How to pronounce the sounds
The first step in teaching a systematic synthetic phonics programme is to teach the sounds which is, by far, the easiest step for children to make. However, if the sounds are pronounced incorrectly, it can make the next step, which is blending for reading, all the harder. It’s worth the time and effort to ensure children are pronouncing the sounds correctly. Our links below will further explain how to pronounce each sound your child will learn in Phonics. Please spend time with your child ensuring they are pronouncing it correctly.
