Roberttown CE(VC) J&I School

Music

Intent: Our Subject Vision

Music at Roberttown CE J&I School is embedded in school life and our aspiration is that every child adopts a lifelong love of music.

Through listening, playing, singing, creating and performing, children will develop confidence, thinking and creative skills and improve their emotional well-being. Children will find that music is both enjoyable and relaxing. Music forms an important part of our Collective Worship, where children can listen to music on entry and exit, using this as a time for reflection and the singing of hymns as part of our worship. Children will use our values of endurance and resilience as well as skills such as determination, hard-work and bravery when performing to an audience.

Implementation:

Our Approach

Music lessons are lively and interactive and aim to foster a passion for music in children of all abilities. We use the Kapow Scheme in all year groups from Reception to Year 6; the interrelated dimensions of music weave through the units to encourage the development of musical skills as the learning progresses through listening and appraising, differing musical activities (including creating and exploring) and performing. Vocabulary is given a high priority and is taught sequentially through school. The children receive a music lesson per week. Specialist music teachers from Musica Kirklees deliver a ukulele lesson each week to Year 4.

In addition to this core scheme, children have the opportunity to take part in choir activities as part of Community, Trust and LA events and they can take up instrumental lessons provided by Musica Kirklees. Some of these lessons are a result of the ‘Whole Class Ukulele’ lessons.

Each term the children who receive instrumental lessons, either inside or outside school, have the opportunity to perform to the whole school, practising their performance skills to a live audience.

The children will have other musical experiences during their time at Roberttown School through theatre visits/productions; instrumental performances from visiting groups and in-school performances (Nativity in Reception and KS1, Year 3/4 performance in the Spring Term and Year 5/6 performance in the Summer Term).

If your child would like to learn to play a new instrument then you are able to sign up for lessons at school using the link below:
